Integrated Behavioral Health / Primary Care

There is growing recognition that mental and physical health problems are inextricably related. A patient newly diagnosed with a chronic or terminal disease may struggle with grief and depression. Untreated anxiety can complicate gastrointestinal problems, fuel insomnia or weight loss, or interfere with a patient’s ability to cope with physical disease. Depression can magnify the disabling effects of pain or prevent someone with diabetes from monitoring blood sugar levels and/or following through with medication instructions. Depression, anxiety, and other mental health symptoms can be a byproduct of these diseases; or these mental health conditions can magnify physical problems’ disabling effects and complicate recovery.

Medications also may produce side effects which include depression or anxiety.

Here are some physical health problems in which depression or anxiety may be present:

  • Thyroid problems
  • Asthma
  • Infertility
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Chronic or acute pain
  • Sleep problems
  • Heart disease and strokes
  • Arthritis
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Alzheimer’s and dementia
  • Weight or eating problems
  • Unexplained stomach problems, headaches or frequent aches and pains with no clear medical diagnosis

When anxiety and depression decrease, compliance with medical treatment for chronic physical conditions, can increase

Aspire’s mental health professionals work closely with treating physicians. Through our collaborative efforts, we:

  • Help patients manage stress, depression, and/or achieve lifestyle changes
  • Promote better management of medical conditions such as diabetes, asthma and cardio-pulmonary functioning, headaches, and acute or chronic pain.
  • Help physicians address concerns such as parenting problems, identifying ADHD and learning disabilities, and coping with a chronically or severely ill family member.
  • Screenings for anxiety and depression;
  • Triaging of patients to determine their mental health condition;
  • Providing short-term counseling for patients;
  • Making social service referrals;
  • Monitoring patients’ compliance and response to psychiatric medication prescribed by their primary care providers

Aspire accepts referrals from medical practitioners, patients themselves, family members, friends, or caring members of the community. Aspire has expedited referral processes with partner medical practices.

We see patients referred by their private physicians in our Gaithersburg offices. In addition, we are proud of our collaboration with Mobile Medical Care, a primary care clinic that serves 6,000 Montgomery County low-income residents. Our bilingual mental health therapists work on site at Mobile Medical Care primary care clinics in Germantown, and Rockville. This onsite location allows Mobile Medical Care doctors who are concerned about their patients’ mental health to personally accompany them down the hall to introduce them to one of our therapists. This adds considerable opportunity and ease for mental health and primary care professionals to work in tandem, providing high quality care to some of our County’s most vulnerable residents.
