Positive Aging EMPOWER NOW is a dynamic, evidence-based mental health and wellness program serving Montgomery County senior residents who may be struggling to find joy in aging.
The program offers comprehensive on-site behavioral health treatment and case management services to seniors and their families. The program offers seven functions, of which six have been recognized as essential by the National Council on Aging.
Options for individual seniors include intake/ evaluation and triage; short-term, clinic-based counseling; social service referrals; limited home therapy; case management, and fun and informative psychotherapy support groups and mental health educational seminars, such as: “What do you mean, my kids don’t want my stuff?” (Stop hoarding and clean up the clutter), and “Brain Fitness – You can still eat chocolate!; Coping with Change; “Communicating with Adult Children”, etc.
Aspire Counseling currently implements the plan at three senior centers in Montgomery County – Rockville Senior Center, Benjamin Gaither Center and The Oaks at Olde Towne. Given the success and popularity of the program, Aspire Counseling is trying to grow the program at each center, and expand the program to additional senior centers and venues within the County.
Seniors will seek help when services are easily accessible. When the therapist is based at their apartment complex or senior center, they can just stop by to ‘talk to a friend,’ rather than viewing it as another ‘doctor’ appointment. The convenience and comfort of on-site counseling makes all the difference to them when receiving mental health counseling.
